Linda Silver reviewed the book A Little Piece of Ground in the Sep/Oct, 2003
AJL Newsletter.  You should read her review; she calls this novel "a powerful
propaganda piece" that presents Israelis as monsters, while Palestinian Arabs
evoke sympathy and empathy.   So I have to question why children are assigned
to read it in the first place.  They shouldn't be.       The closest I can
think of in answer to your search is Bottle in the Gaza Sea, by Valerie
Zenatti, but it is for slightly older readers and dates to the time when Israel
was still in Gaza.   I don't think you'll find a true counter-novel to A Little
Piece of Ground.    Years ago, I wrote to a favorite Sydney Talyor
Award-winning author and asked her to write a novel for middle grade students,
that "doesn't paint Israelis as aggressors and Arabs as their helpless
victims...a novel where the hero or heroine is a young Israeli, struggling to
live a normal life amid terrorism...that would counter the image of Israel that
is found in much of children's literature..." I'm afraid she declined, as she
had moved on to other writing.  Finally, there are some non-fiction books about
the conflict (for kids) that are fair and accurate, and I would be glad to
provide titles if you wish.   Andrea Rapp         From: Stacy Brown

div.yiv3105928266WordSection1 {}-->From another Jewish colleague:    “I am
looking for a book that is appropriate for a Middle School-aged student that
would present an Israeli counter-perspective to the book,A Little Piece of
Ground. I know some kids who are feeling "ashamed" of being Jewish after being
assigned this book in their local public school.  Any good books on the
Arab-Israeli conflict from the Israeli perspective?”    Any suggestions
appreciated.
Thank you,
