Do you have any suggestions for books containing Italian Jewish
folktales or fables?
Cookbooks. Cookbooks are full of all sorts of weirdness. I really like
The Classic Cuisine of the Italian Jews: Traditional recipes and menus
and a memoir of a vanished way of life by Edda Servi Machlin. When I
read this cookbook, I felt I was talking to my dear departed dad. He was
an encyclopedia of nutty stories.
Just as an aside. When he was 50 he figured he'd get his doctorate in
math. UCLA had a language required so he took Italian thinking he would
skate on through, no such luck. At the placement test, the prof couldn't
figure him out so she called in a couple of her buddies. When all the
rocks settled to the bottom of the pond, they said that he was speaking
a charming dialect of ladino from the Florence area of Tuscany (surprise
surprise). This has happened with bunches of american rabis who write to
me in "spanish"; it's really hakatía or turkish ladino or some such
thing but figured it was Spanish. True, they just got the century mixed up.
