Newsletter Jerusalem Books Ltd. Spring - June 2015

Dear Friends,

As we in Israel celebrate Shavu'ah ha-Sefer, Book Week, the consensus is
clear that the legislation to protect Literature and Author's enacted by the
Knesset in 2014 has been largely detrimental. I look forward to the
upcoming AJL in Silver Spring Maryland and anticipate discussion on many
topics including the impact of the law and other more positive developments
in Israeli publication.

Let's begin with Israeli Art for a change. Needless to say the art scene in
Israel is vibrant. Here we are focusing on art books and/or museum catalogs.

'Al Naharot Bavel, By the River's of Babylon,' is a new exhibit at the Bible
Land's Museum in Jerusalem which is accompanied by the publication, isbn
978-965-7027-28-8. The subheading is: 'cuneiform documents from the
beginning of the Babylonian Diaspora,' which puts this book in multiple
scholarly categories including Jewish History and Bible as this is
'biblical' period and Bible and Archeology are frequently, traditionally
joined in Jewish Studies. The book is 183 pp and Horovitz and Wein eds.
Cat 85126 $ 45.00

'By The Rivers of Babylon, has also been published, separately by the Bible
Lands museum and its subheading is: 'the story of the Babylonian Exile.'
This book, authored and edited by Vukosavovic, Pilip isbn 978-965-7027-27-1,
Cat. 85127 $ 49.00

There is an exhibition at the Israel Museum, 'Toldot ha-Enoshut.' This was
first published as an important influential book, 'Kitsur Toldot ha-Enoshut,
A Brief History of Mankind,' (Cat 77204) isbn 978-965-552-040-8 by Yuval
Noah Harari in 2011. Now the exhibit, which the ideas in the book inspired
is also accompanied by a book. This is of course, a museum catalog,
depicting how items in the museum collection tell the story of humanity.
There are archaeological items, artifacts of religion and agriculture as
well as photo's evincing aspects of society. Cat. 85786 $ 45.00

A new and important book in Yiddish is a rarity. 'Bein Hurban le-Tekuma,
Between Destruction and Reconstruction', by Yechiel Sheintuch and Miriam
Rinh has been published by the Hebrew University. The work which includes an
introduction, footnotes and indices is the first, in a multiple volume
series. This volume 1, covers the ' Correspondence between M. Stringler and
H. I. Leivick. The book is a Hebrew book in that the Introduction, footnotes
and research is Hebrew, but the text is mostly the Yiddish correspondence.
Isbn 978-965-552-040-8. The book also has documents in Hebrew and articles
in Yiddish. The books are a numbered limited edition. This is important
regarding Yiddish Language and Literature and Jewish History and will be a
reference work and the basis for research for years to come. Cat 85700.
$ 59.00

In literary analysis and other areas of scholarship we are often asked to
compare and contrast. While the differences are so vast as to make a
comparison unnecessary the comparison and connection to the next book from
the last is merely that they are both numbered editions. Tamar Eilam-Gindin
has authored and published Megillat Ester Unmasked, 166 soft cover pages in
Hebrew. Smaller, shorter and soft cover this work should not be
underestimated or missed. It is Bible and includes even analysis of the
names of Haman. It is Jewish History and Diaspora Communities in its
coverage of Persia and Persian Jewry. The book is scholarly with color
illustration and maps. 978-965-7704-01-1 Cat. 85731 $ 28.00

Under Israel and Zionism, Israel Studies and History is the new biography of
Yitzhak Navon, Kol Ha-Derekh, All the Way, 978-965-07-2379-8. The book on
this marvelous multi talented Zionist leader and Sephardi scholar is
published by Keter. Cat.85581 $ 34.00

Mossad Bialik has published Bio-Etika kahol lavan, Israeli Bio - Ethics.
The book by Professor Gil Sigal covers this fascinating topic in a cutting
edge manner. After all Israel is a leader in this field. We certainly have
the necessary ingredients, advanced medicine and science, many scholars of
Philosophy and Ethics and rich religious traditions relating to these very
issues. The book covers analyzes these issues from different perspectives
such as law, Jewish tradition and the realities of modern Israeli society.
For example fertility issues are involved and 'the right to give birth,' is
something recognized and cherished in Israel and this is reflected in
policies. Similarly, the right to die is discussed wich involves the rights
of an individual to self determination and the right to die with dignity as
well as 'the sanctity of life,' emphasized in Judaism. Balancing these
competeing interests is at the core of this book and also highlights the
contrast between Jewishness and Israeli-ness. Cat. 85603 $ 36.00

For those interested in Israeli comics there is a new issue of Ha-Bor Shel
Sherman. Ask about issue 1 & 2!

Finally, I must mention an important book published by Merkaz Shazar, the
Zalman Shazar Center.'Maharal, akademot,'is an epic work, edited by Elhanan
Reiner, on the sage of Prague, scholar of Hebrew and Philosophy. The book is
over 600 pages on his life, bio, his 'doctrine and influence.' isbn
978-965-227-3208. Highly recommended. Cat 85239 $ 39.00

I would like to take this opportunity to give recognition and congratulate
the AJL and especially its members on the Fiftieth Anniversary and say
thanks for half a century of dedicated efforts in locating collecting
cataloging Jewish Knowledge, History, Philosophy, Language and Literature to
facilitate ongoing Jewish research and studies. We at Jerusalem Books
thank you all and are proud to have played and to continue to play a role in
this essential mission.

Sincerely,

Jeff Spitzer
