Hi, Gail Two folks had questions that I couldn't answer, so I promised to get back to them. Here are the answers, if you could forward to the group who attended the presentation. AJL Participants, Thank you for your interest in the preservation work of the Library of Congress. I hope the information I shared was interesting and useful to you. I'm following up on the questions I could not answer -- and also want to correct two mistakes I made. 1. About what we choose to library bind: We library bind books that are shelved in non-fixed locations (again, as I mentioned, this happens because we are extremely short on space), as we expect these books will be moved around. We continue to bind serials for inventory, security, and preservation reasons. 2. About more commonly-called classes: See http://www.loc.gov/preservation/about/deacid/index.html . We prioritized for treatment those classes that are more commonly called for - those classes have been completed. 3. Cost of mass deacidification (MD) treatment and cost of library binding is determined by weight. I was wrong when I said that MD is the least expensive per page. The cost of MD treatment for an average-sized book is about $20.00. The cost for library binding for an average-sized book is about $7.00.
