Chinese Jews - Large volume by Bishop William C. White, who was there from 1910-1933. Many photographs. One of the first scholarly books written about the Jews of China. Originally a three-volume and then republished as one volume. Chinese Jews: a Compilation of Matters Relating to the Jews of K'aifeng Fu. Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1942. Probably the best one I have seen. Not new. If I were at home I could give you the details on it, but traveling. Likely out of print but many libraries have it. A friend has a great deal of expertise on China and a solid knowledge of Judaism. This person apparently does not know about the intersect between these two. The book for which I am looking would have a title along the lines of THE JEWS OF CHINA. Can you recommend such a book? ___________________________________________ Dr. Don Weinshank Prof. Emeritus Comp. Talk about "those whose heart so moves them!" As Moses says in Ex 36.6 6Moses thereupon had this proclamation made throughout the camp: “Let no man or woman make further effort toward gifts for the sanctuary!” So the people stopped bringing: 7their efforts had been more than enough for all the tasks to be done. The description is much more detailed than regular cataloging andincludes such details as names of authors of approbations (haskamot), bibliographicreferences, etc. The BHB was originally published commercially on CD-ROM, but several years ago the NLIpurchased the rights to the database and converted it to an open-access one, using theLibrary's standard ALEPH software. About 90% of the BHB recorded titles are based on the NLI's collection (location is noted foritems not held by the NLI). Since the rules of description of the BHB and the NLI catalog are very different, it has been difficult to navigate from one to the other, or to transfer data from the BHB to NLI. The NLI is now adding links within its catalog to open the BHB record corresponding to theNLI's record. These links have been added to about 60,000 records with another approximately30,000 remaining (mostly 19th and 20th century imprints). Since this process is semi-automaticit is possible that some incorrect links have been created. Please let us know if youencounter such cases. The Jews of Kaifeng, China: History, Culture, and Religion, by Xu Xin. I had the pleasure of traveling to Kaifeng with Mr. Xu a few years back to meet indigenous Chinese people who claim to be descendants of the Jews of China whose history goes back to about the 12th century. He holds the equivalent of the Chair of Judaica at Nanjing University, and he periodically plans symposia on Jewish cultural matters for Chinese professors across the country. A most interesting gentleman!
