JOB ANNOUNCEMENT - September 2015

Title: Curator
Type of Position: Fulltime, Exempt

Education & Experience: M.A. in museum studies, modern Jewish history, or 
American history. Minimum 5 years professional experience in a museum 
environment.

Salary Range: Commensurate with experience.

Position Summary: Responsible for creating historical content of JHSGW's 
multi-faceted current activities and planning for a new museum, including 
exhibitions, publications, public programs, grant-writing.

Job Requirements: Knowledge of American Jewish history and a strong interest in 
the joys and challenges of presenting and interpreting regional history through 
a national lens; interest in political history and public policy as they relate 
to history of the Jewish experience in the nation's capital. Excellent 
historical research ability and communication skills, both written and 
interpersonal. Past experience working on museum exhibitions and with 
exhibition designers. Ability to work as part of a small but highly 
collaborative team in a fast-paced environment with multiple projects and 
deadlines. Occasional weekend and evening hours.

Primary Responsibilities
- Coordinate development of core and temporary exhibitions for planned new 
regional Jewish history museum, projected to open in 2020. Responsibilities 
include project management, concept development, research, writing, and working 
with scholars, community advisors, and colleagues to create captivating, 
historically rich exhibitions and engaging visitor experiences.
- Create and implement community outreach initiatives related to exhibition 
development, museum collections, audience research.
- Oversee online exhibition development and coordinate traveling exhibitions.
- Develop historical content for in-house print and online publications.
- Develop and present walking tours and public presentations to a wide variety 
of audiences.
- Support development of museum collections through outreach to potential 
donors to the collection; conduct oral history interviews; identify and 
implement new collecting initiatives.
- Assist with grant-writing and associated development activities.
- Provide other assistance as needed to help JHSGW fulfill its mission and 
advance its programs and activities.
- Other duties as assigned by the JHSGW Director and Director of Collections.

About JHSGW
The Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington is the region's foremost 
destination and source for American Jewish history. JHSGW engages audiences 
through exhibitions, public programs, educational initiatives, and its 1876 
synagogue [the oldest in the area]. The current six-person staff works with a 
broad array of board members, community advisors, and consulting scholars to 
develop engaging historical exhibitions, public programs for youth and adults, 
and publications.

JHSGW is planning the move of the historic synagogue to a new site as part of a 
major real estate development project in downtown Washington, D.C. The new 
location will provide JHSGW with land on which to build an adjacent museum. 
Planning for this new facility has begun and is a major focus of all activities.
