Dear Friends,
Before entering into the territory of ever popular modern Hebrew Literature,
I would like to take a moment to focus on Philosophy, Jewish Thought, aka,
Mahshevet Yisrael. In fact an interesting title which covers Rabbinics,
Halakha and Holocaust. Published by Yad Vashem. 'Ve-ha-Sneh Enena Ukal, 'And
The Bush was not Consumed,' Issues from the Holocaust through a Halakhic
prism. Yechezkel Shraga Lichtenstein, a lecturer at Bar Ilan University
brings sources from Bible, Talmud Midrash - Aggada through Responsa,
She'elot u - teshuvot to bear on the Philosophical issues confronted in the
Sho'ah. It all comes down to the sanctity of life, in my opinion.
Resistance, especially if hopeless, cooperation possibly to save the lives
of others and suicide are all confronted. This is done through the sources,
such as Talmud on Avoda Zara,as well as the writings of 'modern' rabbis of
the 19th and 20th Cent. CE, for example, the writings of Rabbi Efraim Oshry
of Kaunas, (Ghetto) Kovno Lithuanaia, author of Shut Mi'amakim. The book has
a impressive bibliography and footnotes, soft cover, 363 pp., isbn
978-965-308-496-4, Cat. 86331 $ 30.00
Under Philosophy - Jewish Thought and Rabbinics, Bar Ilan University
published an important and highly relevant book, 'Ben Kana'ut le-Hesed,
Between Zealotry and Grace.' The book deals with 'Anti Zealotic Trends in
Rabbinic Thought.' Isbn 978-956-226-463-3, Cat. 85765 $ 47.00
Let us transition between Philosophy, Halakha and Sho'ah to Hebrew
Literature with a stop on an academic title from Magnes on, ' Here Dwells
the Jewish People, A Century of American Yiddish Literature,'' Kan Gar ha-Am
ha-Yehudi.' While normally we are focused on Bible, History, literature all
from Israel, here we mention Yiddish from the US . The book is in Hebrew
from the Hebrew University, by Avraham Novershtern, isbn
978-965-493-822-8, Cat. 85853 $ 48.00
For those interested in Modern Hebrew, the author Erez Bitton has produced
another new book of Hebrew Poetry, 'Bet ha-Pesanterim,' 'House of Piano's.'
He has written previous works which delve into the Sephardi, more
specifically, his Moroccan roots and he and his community's place in Israel.
Published by Kibbutz Ha-Meuhad, isbn . Cat. 86226 $ 25.00
Moshe Pelli has authored and edited, 'the Journals of the Haskala, Kitve
Ha-Et. In the Mid 19th Century,' The large, (full page sized), soft cover
volume, is on two Jewish, Hebrew, Journals, Bikurim and Hehalutz, isbn
978-965-493-818-1. Needless to say this work is important in the study and
research of Jewish History and Hebrew Language. Cat. 85577 $ 40.00
Recently we mentioned Ahron Appelfeld's latest has come out. Long Summer
Nights, Laylot Kayits arukhim, published by Kinneret Zemora Bitan Dvir.
Another must have/don't miss! Cat 86229 $ 22.00
We also mentioned, that Yohai Oppenheimer wrote, Remembering the Diaspora in
Hebrew Literature, Shem Me'ahore Kore Li Yabeshet - Zikaron le Galut
ba-Sifrut ha-Ivrit ,' isbn 978-965-536-164-3 and this book by the
recognized scholar is published by Mossad Bialik. Cat 86193 $29.00 These
are among the titles that are worth mentioning again as not to be missed by
those collecting Hebrew Literature, Belle Lettres' from Israel as well as
those studying Jewish History.
Rubik Rozenthal has authored, 'Shirat ha-Pazamnik, Milon Tseva'I lo rishmi,'
This book charts Israeli military slang and nomenclature over several
generations. The title refers to the IDF procedure of advancement based on
seniority. While some may be interested and others not, I felt it was an
interesting convergence of Hebrew Language and Israel Culture. It is also
Titled, Soldier's Muse, UNOFFICIAL Dictionary of the Israeli Army,
published by Keter, isbn 978-965-07-2423-8 Cat. 86203 $29.00
On Israel and Zionism, let us mention and recommend, 'Ben Gurion ve-ha-Huka,
Ben Gurion and the Constitution,' by Nir Kedar. The book examines early
Israel history on a fascinating subject the absence of a written
constitution. It examines the thinking and influence of Ben Gurion, using
speeches made in the Knesset. The non essential nature of a constitution
could not have been lost on the new nation which emerged from the British
Mandate, a colonial power, democratic yet without a Constitution as well.
The book explores Ben Gurion's thinking and persuasion that a constitution
in Israel would be divisive and hinder the development of the state. The 317
page book has fifty two (52), pages of footnotes for all the chapters,
thirty (30) pages of sources and an eight (8) page index. This one is
published by Kinneret Zemora Bitan, Dvir, and Bar Ilan University, isbn
978-965-552-981-4, Cat. 86278 $ 28.00
To round out this subject area it should be noted that a new autobiography
of Yitzhak Navon, 'Navon, kol ha-dereh' former MK and President of Israel
has been published. He was a brilliant intellectual, from a Sephardi family
and a multi-talented author, play-write, as well. 978-965-07-2379-8. Cat
85581 $ 30.00
As we approach the twentieth anniversary of the assassination of Yithak
Rabin, please note, 'Yitzhak Rabin's Assasination the Untold Story.,' The
book is by Dvir Kariv, published by Tefer isbn 978-965-7226-39-1 Cat
86184 $ 28.00
