I wanted to see if anyone had any experience or information they could share about the libib catalog platform. I searched the HaSafran archives and see no mention of it.
As I explained in an earlier post, I'm a retired academic librarian working to revive and enhance my temple library. We're exploring various avenues to creating a catalog, from scratch, and reorganizing the collection in a more standard scheme. I've been looking at several online catalog platforms including LibraryWorld, Surpass and Destiny, but I'm finding the simpler and friendly libib (pronounced le bib) very attractive. It has a very easy and productive upload/add system. For bulk loading, it accepts a CSV file with ISBN 10 and 13 and its case-by-case record loading accepts ISBN, LCCN (OCLC) and keyword. There is an IOS/Android app for scanning ISBN barcodes directly from books. More importantly, it's been great at finding and adding records. Compared to other systems I've looked at – and I haven't checked them all – it's performed better on this point. The points where it is less wonderful are precision searching – keyword only – and flexibility of display options. I was able to suppress DDC and LC numbers from the display, which I appreciate, but it doesn't show custom call numbers prominently. There is no field for subject headings, we we're using their Tag field for the is purpose and I like the way they display tags. We're a small temple library: I estimate our holdings in the 3,000-4,000 volume range and simple may be fine, even ideal, in our situation. Overall, I'd say libib is less robust than most of the other services, but not much. Though it is not the deciding factor, the cost is certainly a plus; $60 / year for the pro version. And we can export our records if we want to port to another system later. I think this could be a very attractive option for other libraries in our situation. We've loaded less than 200 records so far and we're still deciding about which classification system is best for our situation and we haven't "tagged" most of the loaded records so far .... but if you want to look at an example of what we've done, the link is http://tbeaptos.libib.com/i/temple-beth-el-aptos Lee Jaffe Temple Beth El, Aptos
