Prof. Zohar Shavit’s 2004 critique (in English) of Nathan Efrati’s book

"Milshon yehidim lilshon uma: hadibur ha'ivri be'eretz Israel, 1881-1992" , ‘A
Heady Hebrew’

http://www.haaretz.com/a-heady-hebrew-1.138717 shows how difficult it is for
historians to separate fact from fiction even when dealing with a relatively
recent historical phenomenon such as the development and later establishment of
the spoken Hebrew language in Palestine and Israel. There seem to be more
shadows than light thrown upon this fascinating subject.

The Hebrew language, in common with other spoken languages, is dynamic and in
the throes of continuous development, especially in this digital age.

I am currently researching Jewish life in mediaeval England where it appears
that Jews communicated with each other in written Hebrew. Did they also speak
it?

Thank you to Guila for sharing with us this fascinating article. Aa a Sabra I
can attest that eventually, Hebrew won, but, now the language is no longer
pure. The Internet, TV and travel caused to the Englishizing of the Hebrew
language. Even Haim Rabin z"l said: "Ain lanu PARTNER lashalom" as if there
is no Hebrew word for "partner".

In my last visit to Israel several stores and restaurants had English names.
The signs appeared ONLY in English. In this article I read that the leadership
in the early days before Israel independence insisted on Hebrew names for
businesses.

It is still a miracle. The leadership efforts to create a sense of peoplehood
through the language shows that they were visionaries in the true sense of the
word.
