There is lots of information on the AJL Wiki regarding automation for synagogue libraries. Look under the heading "Knowledgebases" in the digital publications section.
Personally speaking, in my school library I used the Opals system for many years and found it both reliable and economical. Their website is help.opalsinfo.net
