A set of four volumes in the field of traditional biblical cantillation. These volumes present biblical cantillation in a new and enlightening format that facilitates the reader’s understanding of its purpose.

General Description

Extant biblical manuscripts until the eighth century were written in scrolls using only consonantal writing, without vocalization, punctuation, or signs for cantillation. In the eighth century, biblical manuscripts began to appear in book format with both punctuation marks and cantillation marks. With the advent of punctuation and cantillation, the editor writing only with consonants could enable the reader to comprehend without hesitation and mistakes.

The necessity of diacritics for an accurate reading is clear to all, but very are aware of the role of biblical cantillation. The prevailing view is that the cantillation marks serve merely as musical notation. This system was well known from the period of Moses Ben-Amram until the period of the Great Assembly, as indicated by the ability of the Sages of Great Assembly to write books in the format of biblical writing with all that entails. Yet, from the time of the Great Assembly until close to our era, almost three thousand years, the system of cantillation was virtually obscure and inaccessible.

The purpose of this work is to establish the syntactical, punctuational and exegetical roles of biblical cantillation marks.

Brief Description of Volumes

Volume I:

"The Grammatical Rules of Accentuation in Biblical Manuscripts" (946 pp). This volume deals with the syntactical role of cantillation marks – how these signs divide the verse syntactically into its primary and ancillary functions, up to four degrees of division. This division has ancient syntactical and exegetical significance going as far back as the era of Moses.

This volume along with the three accompanying volumes aim to make accessible to the public the findings of the researchers, so that everyone can immediately and effortlessly discern the syntactical division of each verse,  and thus to experience what it was like to sit in the academy of Moses and his disciples.

To this end, we have republished many of the biblical texts with marks and indices that will allow the reader to discern the defined clauses based on the punctuation provided by the cantillation marks. In Volumes II, III and IV, we have applied the rules described in Volume I to create a graphic presentation of the text that makes the syntax clear to the reader, as follows:

Volume II:

"The Pentateuch" (with marked clauses) (400 pp)

Volume III:

"Haftarot for all Sabbaths and Festivals, and the Five Megillot (Five Scrolls)" (with marked clauses) (200 pp)

Volume IV:

"Psalms" (with marked clauses) (120 pp)
