The Providence Community Library (PCL) is seeking a Library Director who is a 
visionary and an innovator.  The Library Director serves as the chief executive 
officer of PCL, a non-profit multi-library system, and reports to the PCL Board 
of Directors.  The next leader will be guided by the values of ALA and the 
strategic vision initiated by the PCL Leadership Team and Board.  The 
successful candidate will lead with vision and communicate that vision to the 
community and staff to keep PCL relevant and at the cutting edge of library 
service best practices.  The Board of Trustees and staff seek a leader who will 
ensure that PCL adheres to state standards and represents PCL at the statewide 
and the national level.  The successful candidate will provide leadership that 
is cognizant of and responsive to the diverse needs of Providence residents and 
will serve as a highly visible spokesperson for PCL at the city, state, and 
community levels.

Providence Community Library serves Providence through nine libraries located 
in neighborhoods across the city.  Named by Architectural Digest as the 
country's Best Small City, by Travel and Leisure as a top city in America, and 
one of America's best cities for food, Providence welcomes diversity and is a 
mecca for the arts, culture and tourism.  We are located forty minutes from 
Newport, an hour from Boston, three hours from Portland or New York City. 

Candidates must have an MLS from an ALA accredited institution as well as a 
strong passion for library services in the 21st century and respect for 
traditional core library values.   S/he must also have at least five years of 
experience successfully managing public libraries, ideally including a 
multi-center library system or large urban library, or comparable arts/cultural 
organizations.  Strong communication, interpersonal and problem solving skills 
are required, and experience working with a socio-economically diverse, 
multi-cultural, multi-lingual population is preferred; ability to speak Spanish 
is a plus.  The ability to generate innovative and resourceful fundraising 
ideas, competence in overseeing budgets, experience working successfully with a 
governing board, and experience successfully managing a diverse staff are 
important.
