I think you may be referring to The Aleph-Bet
Story Book, by Deborah Pessin. My husband and I
read this to my oldest daughter many years ago,
and yes, it had a brown cover. I think it has been reprinted.

Hi,
I think this question went around once before,
but Im trying to remember the title of and find
a book of short stories in English about the Aleph-bet from many years ago.
Maybe had a brown cover? The letters of the
aleph-bet were personified, each story was about one or some of the letters.
Anyone remember?
