It has also gotten good reviews elsewhere. The story revolves around the discovery of an unknown Bach cantata in manuscript, with an antisemitic libretto. In 2014 Yale U.P. published a book called Tainted Glory: Anti-Judaism in Handel's Messiah, by musicologist Michael Marissen (who isn't Jewish). Marissen also wrote a book on anti-Judaism in Bach's St. John Passion. So Belfer's premise is solid, even though antisemitism and anti-Judaism are not quite the same phenomenon. But here's more that's interesting: Lauren Belfer and Michael Marissen are wife and husband. Both books are excellent and both are coming into our synagogue library.
