Dear colleagues,

I am forwarding a message originally posted on ATLA’s listserv. Many RAS
libraries are members of the Association of Research Libraries but not all; and
I assume that SSC libraries are not ARL members - please take a few minutes to
respond to this survey.

Please contact Lynne Thomas directly for any questions
([email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>) as I am not involved in her
research; she looks forward to hearing from you.

Thank you,
Rachel (ATLA-AJL liaison)

Subject: [atlantis] Survey of Rare Books and Special Collections in Non-ARL
Libraries

Dear Colleagues,

I’m working on building a list of libraries that work with rare books and
special collections, but are not members of the Association for Research
Libraries (ARL). ARL libraries are routinely surveyed and studied, and assumed
to be representative of the field, simply because there is an actual list of
libraries to work with. As a rare book librarian in a non-ARL library, I’m
working to remedy this, so that our literature is inclusive of rare books and
special collections in all kinds of libraries.

I suspect that some of you (particularly thelogical seminaries with historical
collections, for example) might fall into this category. The purpose of this
list is, ultimately, to begin building an easily distributed, open access list
of collections and libraries that are often overlooked in our professional
literature—those without the resources of ARL libraries, who are still working
in the special collections field in some capacity. This list will be made
accessible to anyone who wants to research how non-ARL libraries function
within our profession.

Here’s some more information and a link to the survey:

This blog post includes the list of libraries as of last year.

I would deeply appreciate it if you would take a look, and add your library to
be counted if you fit the criteria.

Many thanks!

Lynne
