Dear Hasafran members, The Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary will host a program in conjunction with Archives Week on Wednesday, October 25th at 4:00 pm in the Reading Room (K703) at 3080 Broadway, New York, NY 10027, starring two of our archival collections. We plan to feature audio recordings of Jewish ethnic music from Europe, Africa, and Asia in the Solomon Rosowsky and Johanna Spector collections, focusing on different communities' cantillation and prayer traditions.
The recordings date from the 1930s through the 1970s, created by Johanna Spector, an ethnomusicology, and by Solomon Rosowsky, a cantor and composer. Each created field recordings of Jewish ethnic music from Europe, Africa, and Asia. Spector's recordings primarily feature the Indian and Yemenite Jewish communities, while Rosowsky's focus on European Jewish tradition. The program, hosted by archivist Marissa Hiller and myself, will compare and contrast the archival documents which describe the field work done by Spector and Rosowsky and will play selected recordings.
