I lead a monthly short story discussion group. Here are our selections from the past 3 years: The UnAmerican by Molly Antopol Many Seconds into the Future by John J. Clayton Ask for a Convertible by Danit Brown (2 sessions) Quiet Americans by Erika Dreifus Natasha by David Bezmozgis House of Memory: Stories by Jewish Women Writers of Latin America edited by Marjorie Agosin (2 sessions) After Abel and Other Stories by Michal Lemberger (2 sessions) The New Diaspora edited by Aarons, Patt & Schechner (7 sessions) The Best Place on Earth by Ayelet Tsabari (4 sessions) Bertrand Court by Michelle Brafman (6 sessions) From Foe to Friend by SY Agnon and Shay Charka The Last Car Over the Sagamore Bridge by Peter Orner (3 sessions)
I also used The Best Place on Earth with 2 other groups and After Abel with 1 other group (as a weekly continuing education course). Both were extremely well received. I highly recommend them! Plus, Ayelet Tsabari “SKYPE’d” with the groups and was lovely. We have also SKYPE’d with Michelle Brafman and Peter Orner (just yesterday from Namibia!) which really enhanced our understanding and appreciation for their writing. The New Diaspora is an excellent anthology that kept the group busy for 7 sessions. In 2018, I will be using America and I: short stories by American Jewish women writers edited by Joyce Antler over 5 sessions and I am repeating Bertrand Court with two other groups. I seem to always be scrambling to find new, highly literary short stories with Jewish content to use with my groups and would appreciate any “tried & true” recommendations beyond the classics like Singer, Roth, Ozick, Paley, etc. Shabbat Shalom! A discussion stories from the book Apples from the Desert was very successful. The discussion on the stories in the book After Abel (recommended by Rachel Kamin) went well too. Thank you to Rachel for suggesting the book The Best Place on Earth. I like it but I was asked for additional suggestions. Shabbat shalom, Amalia
