JACK S. BERGER, is a Yiddish- and Hebrew-fluent Independent Scholar/retiree, committed to translating Holocaust Yizkor (Memorial) Books into English. Recently he completed his 12th and 13th (volunteer) translations: the RAWA RUSKA (Ukraine/Galicia) and UTENA (Lithuania) Yizkor Books, which will be going to the printer within the next few weeks. He only prints a small amount of copies additional to his pre-printing orders.
In the past ~14 years, Jack has also translated the complete Memorial Books from the following eleven towns: BARANOVICH (Belarus), BELICA (Belarus), CIESZANOW (Poland), DERECZIN (Belarus), GORA-KALWARIA (Poland), SZCZEBRZESZYN (Poland/Galicia), TOMASZOW-LUBELSKI (Poland/Galicia), VOLKOVYSK (Belarus), ZAMBROW (Poland), ZAMOSC (Poland/Galicia), ZELVA (Belarus) I had the good fortune to lightly edit the Rawa Ruska Book and it was a profound experience, reading 700+ pages about the town and it's Jewish inhabitants from their beginnings centuries ago, to their annihilation in and around the town decades ago. It has added immeasurably to the Computational Anthropology and Spatial History work I am doing related to the town. Acquisition of books from several different towns/regions/countries would allow scholars to do multiple forms of comparative research and analysis that is not possible with only bits and pieces from different books. The books are printed hard-bound, with beautiful leather/gold-foiled covers and range in price between $54 - $100, depending on their size. Because he has invited people to be “Supporters” of his work by buying two (or more) books, where one is then donated to a university or appropriate Jewish organization, some of you may already have copies of his translated books. I feel that Jack Berger is a Jewish treasure whose efforts should be supported and whose work should be spread much more widely than the relatively few people who are lucky enough to hear about him and so gain access to copies of his books. To that end, I am writing this note to inform you of his past, present and future work. Jack is committed to keep translating Yizkor Books as long as he is able; he is just a few years shy of 80. Please connect with him (1) about purchasing the RAWA RUSKA and/or UTENA books that are about to go to print OR the remaining other books he still has available for sale**; (2) to be put on his mailing list to be informed as he chooses which book to translate next and/or completes a translation, and; (3) to encourage him, maybe support him, to ensure that his work is set up to be made available in some additional, preferably electronic, medium, at least after he is gone….many, many years from now, hopefully. And please feel free to reach out to me if you have any trouble reaching him. Jack S. Berger MS, PhD Independent Scholar (201) 805-9995 [email protected] (Mahwah, New Jersey) Thank you. Karen Roekard, MBA Independent Scholar (510) 843-4952 [email protected] (Berkeley, Ca. ** The DERECZIN Book is currently out of print but he does have copies left of all the others with the exception of the BARANOVICH book, of which he only has one copy and the VOLKOVYSK, ZAMOSC and ZAMBROW books, of which he has fewer than ten copies left.
