Hi all: Besides the Hereville series (loved by boys and girls) and the Harvey series, our 3rd and 4th graders read the following from the library:
City of Spies by Susan Kim, Laurence Klavan, and Pascal Dizin. First Second, 2010 A Jewish detective story involving Nazi spies in NYC with Evelyn, a young girl, and Zirconium man who track them down. The Golem's Mighty Swing by James Sturm. Drawn and Quarterly, 2003 More sophisticated kids will get something out of this book about a Jewish traveling baseball team in the 1920's dealing with anti-semitism in the Michigan countryside. Resistance, Defiance, and Victory. Three books in a series by Carla Jablonski and Leland Purvis. First Second, 2010 Kids in France fighting the baddies (Nazis) during WWII. No "graphic" violence. Boys love this series. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire by Jessica Gunderson. Capstone Press, 2006 Slim paperback often borrowed by girls. Lily Renee, Escape Artist: From Holocaust Survivor to Comic Book Pioneer by Trina Robbins. Graphic Universe, 2011 Again, girls enjoy this book. From Vienna, Austria to England via the Kindertransport and then New York, this is a graphic biography. A bit of Nazi activity at the beginning. Note: A preponderance of graphic novels unfortunately touches on the Shoah, but children 4th grade and up, with their parents' OK, read the above with great interest. There are other titles, more obviously about the Shoah, which are in our collection, but are for older teens or adults.
