Yet, in just 50 years, their indigenous communities outside Palestine almost totally disappeared as more than 99 percent of the Jewish population fled. The post-1948 displacement of more than 850,000 Jewish refugees was the one of the largest population movements of non-Muslims from the Arab Middle East and North Africa. Some 650,000 went to Israel and now, Jewish refugees from Arab and Muslim countries and their descendants, comprise over 50 percent of the population of Israel. Lyn Julius, British-born daughter of Iraqi-Jewish refugees, is founder of Harif, the UK Association of Jews from the Middle East and North Africa. A journalist and blogger, her work has appeared in The Times of Israel, Huffington Post, Haaretz, JNS, Algemeiner, and The Guardian, among others.
