Dean of Libraries

James Madison University (JMU) invites applications and nominations for the 
position of Dean of Libraries. Serving a critical role in advancing the 
academic endeavor, JMU Libraries embraces engagement, collaboration, and 
innovation. With more than 150 employees, the Libraries serve a university with 
eight colleges, over 900 faculty, and over 22,000 students. JMU Libraries 
supports teaching, learning, and creative exploration in four physical 
locations and through robust online programs and services. JMU Libraries 
balances a forward-thinking vision for innovation in libraries and educational 
technologies with an appreciation of traditional library values and stakeholder 
experiences. 

 

JMU seeks applicants committed to helping a complex unit work to achieve its 
mission and vision in a collegial and collaborative culture. In addition, a 
leader will build and sustain relationships with strategic partners and 
stakeholders. Deans at JMU provide academic, intellectual and administrative 
leadership to support their assigned units and the academic division as a 
whole. The Dean of Libraries reports to the provost and responsibilities 
include collaborating with fellow deans, participating in service activities on 
campus and engaging in scholarship through publication, presentations and R&D 
activities. The dean represents the university at state, regional, national and

Qualities and qualifications:    

-          Education and scholarship demonstrating considerable knowledge of 
current and future trends affecting libraries and/or educational technology.  

-          Leadership and administration experience. 

-          Evidence of effective change management and alignment toward a 
shared vision within a complex organization. 

-          Demonstrated success with identifying and securing resources for an 
organization.  

-          Relevant advanced academic degree. 



Applications will be accepted until the position is filled, with review of 
applications to begin October 23, 2018. The desired start date is July 1, 2019, 
or sooner, depending upon availability of the successful candidate. Salary will 
be commensurate with experience.
