Dear all: I am happy to inform you of the publication of my Hebrew book The Jews of Iran and Rabbinic Literature; New Perspective by Mossad Harav Kook, Jerusalem (2019). The Jews of Iran and Rabbinic Literature: New Perspectives addresses the question of Iranian Jewry’s affinity with rabbinic literature from the sixteenth to the beginning of the twentieth century. Many of the book’s theses challenge and revise prevailing views that see this Jewry as largely isolated from world Jewry and its rabbinic legacy. First, the book shows that the Jews of Iran were in contact with non-Iranian Jews in a variety of contexts. Furthermore, these contexts exposed the Jews of Iran to Judaism and rabbinic writings that were common outside Iran. Iranian Jewry’s affinity with rabbinic literature--including the texts of the Talmudic era and later halakhic and kabbalistic writings-- is reflected in literary genres that were composed or were utilized by the Jews of Iran. Letters, bills, texts of formulas and lists of books in private ownership demonstrate too the affinity of Jews in Iran with rabbinic works.
