Marion's email made my whiskers wiggle because it made me remember an email from 10 years back which I looked up in my AJL-list archives, to whit:

On December 22, 2009, a member of AJL, Joan Gremont of the JFed of Greater Dallas posted on this list and recommended Sadia Shepard's "The Girl from Foreign: A Memoir". In the book, Ms. Shepard, a graduate of Stanford and docu-film maker, writes about her promise to her grandmothher to return to India to document the life-journey her grandmother made from Bene Israel (India) to the U.S.A. But there's a really great twist to the tale:

Ms. Shepard's BeneIsrael-jewish-india grandmother ran off with a Muslim-pakistan-contractor to go live in Lahore (Pakistan) where
...she raised her daughter muslim who
...moved to the u.s.a and married a christian, then had Sadia who
...was raised christian and who
...promised her grandmother, who lived with her daughter and grand-daughter in the u.s.a., in a tri-political, tri-religiour, tri-lingual, tri-cooking household to....
...journey to India to document the grandmother's story.

There is a 2009 interview with Sadia Shepard on the new-dehli-based NDTV video program "Just Books" <https://www.ndtv.com/video/shows/just-books/the-girl-from-foreign-by-sadia-shepard-72662> hosted by Sunil Sethi. The interview is fabulous because both Sadia and Sunil are so well-spoken, intelligent and charming.

Joan Gremont herself is quite interesting because, (if I'm understanding the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas <https://jewishdallas.org/calendar/community-calendar/gone-2-texas-two-waves-of-immigration-soviet--south-african-1521499057> webpage correctly), her husband Boris's parents came from Russia to South Africa and then to Texas.

Not sefardic, true, but an interesting story nonetheless. Here's a video of the delightful interview Boris did <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxe2Ro2toZ4> with the Dallas Jewish Historical Society

Cheers to one and all
