Hello, Safranit:

I am looking for thought partners for a potential endeavor in a small
synagogue library: to discuss a word-based topical classification system
and other struggles of managing a largely self-help, low or no budget
library. Is anyone out there already using a non-numerical system that is
working?

More details:
I would like to simplify (hopefully not complicate) a small synagogue
collection of of 5 or 6,000 materials by rethinking the current cataloging
and classification system. I'd like to explore a BISAC-like non-numerical
topically arranged non-fiction and even consider it for fiction (though I'm
skeptical). BISAC is the system which bookstores use. Currently, we use
Weine but I like the Elazar arrangement order. Philosophically, it pains me
to abandon a numerical system but more and more, patrons and library
helpers, especially the younger set, are in a hurry and/or do not
understand how to find books or meticulous reshelving.

My goals are to make it easier for patrons to find books, to make it easier
and faster for me and possibly volunteers to catalog in the future, to
clean up bibliographic information, to perhaps more easily do
collection management and development, and always, to increase circulation.

Thanks!
Toby Harris
