Description

The Department of Religion at Tufts University is seeking an assistant 
professor in modern Judaism commencing September 2021. The precise area of 
specialization is open, but preference will be given to applicants whose work 
demonstrates critical understanding of Judaism as a religious tradition while 
engaging such issues as migration, diaspora, antisemitism; modern Jewish 
thought and political theory; Judaism and pluralism; or Judaism as American 
religion.

Qualifications

PhD in Religion or cognate field by September 1, 2021 is required, along with 
evidence of engagement with the theory and methods of religious studies and 
fluency in research-specific languages. The successful candidate must possess 
an active commitment to research and publishing and should provide evidence of 
engagement with undergraduate instruction. Beyond expanding curricular 
engagements in Religion and Judaic Studies, successful candidates will be 
interested in contributing to other interdisciplinary programs at Tufts such as 
Race, Colonialism and Diaspora; International Relations; Women’s, Gender and 
Sexuality Studies; or Civic Studies. Candidates will be expected to teach 
Introduction to Judaism and to develop a range of historical or thematic 
courses relating to their specialty.
