*Race, Racism, and the Jim Crow Museum: A Discussion with Dr. David Pilgrim* *Monday, January 18, 2021** | 3:00 pm | Zoom* One of America’s most fascinating museums is housed inside Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. *The Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia* uses racist objects of intolerance to teach tolerance and promote social justice, examining the historical patterns of race relations and the origins and consequences of racist depictions. The aim is to engage visitors in open and honest dialogues about this country’s racial history. *Founder and curator, Dr. David Pilgrim* has said, “We are not afraid to talk about race and racism; we are afraid not to.” Join Dr. Pilgrim this MLK Day in a discussion about race, racism and the Jim Crow Museum. Learn about their teaching methods and the belief in the triumph of dialogue. *About Featured Speaker, Dr. David Pilgrim* Dr. David Pilgrim, an applied sociologist with a doctorate from The Ohio State University, is the founder and Director of the Jim Crow Museum, the nation’s largest, publicly accessible collection of racist objects, located at Ferris State University where he serves as Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion. A prolific writer, Dr. Pilgrim is the author of *Understanding Jim Crow: Using Racist Memorabilia to Teach Tolerance and Promote Social Justice* (PM Press, 2015) as well as countless additional writings used by scholars, students, and civil rights and human rights workers to better understand historical and contemporary expressions of racism. He has been interviewed by National Public Radio, *Time* magazine, the British Broadcasting Corporation, and dozens of newspapers, including the *New York Times*, *Washington Post*, *Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, *and the Los Angeles Times. *Everyone is encouraged to TAKE A VIRTUAL TOUR <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=X9ou6MvycZU__;!!KGKeukY!hs8iB-boEvQH96k73f6tQvpniYt17hwEkBftDqtIKk3q3r4uFAiFR5AnLsD62Xd0H8s$ >of the Jim Crow Museum prior to the conversation with Dr. Pilgrim.* Pre-registration is required to access the online program. You attended one – or many – of the more than 70 digital programs that the Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center hosted via Zoom and Facebook Live this year. At the beginning of the pandemic, our staff quickly adapted to bring our events online so that our constituents could stay engaged with our work from the safety of their homes. On behalf of the Holocaust & Humanity Center, I want to thank you for supporting our mission <https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001HmoBRBC_s0h6wpQdi1yT6bZe_Skwewk59lKesf7-VN-1jSVgaX7q2wQZlDD7SMGRfyiJtcFNEMhGnfEoCWq6TsMUZtWoLU3T7N1sQFpYGpfC6XLoIDAMcgAGvS1kGOBgSlROjy99SB5D9mufNQMwPZlBaKA5bBugloCxeyUEcKvApmqCT-B9cg==&c=pUPPzXImoZ431rDpH8uCq_2cpJ2QllbhIQitKFC8Ayx6JDDDnn8-3g==&ch=wzORV1QMm8xsW1IbG_P6LTjKPS1ivQECA7M4CjJcNeMKtcZ_vyPklA==__;!!KGKeukY!hs8iB-boEvQH96k73f6tQvpniYt17hwEkBftDqtIKk3q3r4uFAiFR5AnLsD6i0_riiw$ > of ensuring the lessons of the Holocaust inspire action today. Tuning in from places like Vancouver to Israel and Cincinnati, more than 10,000 of you attended our programs that educated about the Holocaust, modern-day social issues, antisemitism, and more. In a year when we saw a rise in antisemitic attacks both in Ohio and across the country and our nation reckons with deep racial injustice, we were encouraged by the response we received from our programs. Approximately 90 percent of surveyed attendees said they learned something new about the Holocaust, while 80 percent said they felt a responsibility to stand up to hate and antisemitism after attending one of the programs. We know that our programs combated Holocaust denial, changed hearts and minds, and educated people of all ages and backgrounds. You encouraged us with your feedback about the programs, with comments like, “An excellent presentation. The stories need to be told as a way to heal and eliminate ignorance. Education is fatal to discrimination." We know this work has never been as important as it is right now, and we’re able to continue doing it because of support from people like you. When you donate to the Holocaust & Humanity Center, your support <https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001HmoBRBC_s0h6wpQdi1yT6bZe_Skwewk59lKesf7-VN-1jSVgaX7q2wQZlDD7SMGRfyiJtcFNEMhGnfEoCWq6TsMUZtWoLU3T7N1sQFpYGpfC6XLoIDAMcgAGvS1kGOBgSlROjy99SB5D9mufNQMwPZlBaKA5bBugloCxeyUEcKvApmqCT-B9cg==&c=pUPPzXImoZ431rDpH8uCq_2cpJ2QllbhIQitKFC8Ayx6JDDDnn8-3g==&ch=wzORV1QMm8xsW1IbG_P6LTjKPS1ivQECA7M4CjJcNeMKtcZ_vyPklA==__;!!KGKeukY!hs8iB-boEvQH96k73f6tQvpniYt17hwEkBftDqtIKk3q3r4uFAiFR5AnLsD6i0_riiw$ > makes it possible for us to: · Continue creating multiple digital programs and other virtual offerings every month · Give educators the tools and resources they need to effectively teach about the Holocaust · Provide funding so all students, regardless of economic circumstances, can visit HHC’s museum · Send traveling exhibits to isolated communities · Create innovative programming to engage the community in the history of the Holocaust I want you to know that your engagement and commitment to our mission is appreciated and valued. Your willingness to learn from our programs and share these lessons with your friends and families makes our communities and world better places.
