Dear all

It has been tough here in South Africa but one adjusts. I believe our
numbers are the 5th highest in the world. However most people have followed
the rules - masks sanitizing etc.

We were initially confined to our homes for the whole day, (no exercise or
even walking the dogs!!) for the first month in March, except to do grocery
shopping and buy pharmaceuticals, I found it was a good reason to organise
and sort the house and to make progress with various projects. And I was
fairly positive. I am an Honourary Research Associate attached to the
Kaplan Centre at the University of Cape Town so have several big projects.
We were also not allowed to buy alcohol or cigarettes (cigarettes didn't
bother me as I dont smoke) but I missed the occasional glass of wine or
whisky!!

Except for a few weeks my grandchildren who attend the Jewish Day School
were at home and home schooled but then even though the government schools
were still closed private schools had the option of re-opening and parents
could either send their children or not depending on their circumstances.
My daughter sent her two little girls back and it worked well. They enjoyed
the extra attention as the classes were smaller! Unfortunately the end
result was not good as the school that was already under threat was forced
to close at the end of the year. So the children can either attend the main
campus which is quite far away or go to local government or private schools
in the area. My children have chosen a private school where Hebrew is
taught and there is a rabbi in charge of Jewish Studiesfor the Jewish
children even though the school is non-denominational.

Then for the second month there was still no alcohol and cigarettes but we
were allowed to go out between 6 and 9 a.m. Funny I found that worked well
as one got into a rhythm of walking regularly on the beautiful promenade
along the sea that is adjacent to the apartment block where I live. By the
next month restaurants could re-open with people sitting outside in small
groups and alcohol could be served. Slowly things seemed to return almost
to normal. We began meeting friends outside not in our homes. There has
been a curfew all the time but now it was as late as 11 p.m.

The University Library has been closed all the time. Though I believe now
you can request a book and it will be packed and left out for you. The
staff are not back. Our Jewish Public Library, the Jacob Gitlin Library is
working behind closed doors . You can request a book and make a time to
fetch it on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. but no entry and no browsing.
I believe the Public Libraries have expanded their collection service to
include a half hour of browsing.

Unfortunately we are now experiencing the second wave and a new strain of
the virus. It is quite frightening as they say it is more transmissable. We
are back with a 9 o' clock curfew and alcohol is banned again.
Theoretically it is only until 10 January but who knows as it will depend
on the number of new cases and whether the hospitals can cope.. Heaven
knows when we will get the vaccination. I have heard that it should be mid
2021, but possibly later. This is not at all encouraging. To be honest I am
finding this regression with the second wave more stressful than the first.
None of my close friends or family has contracted the virus but
acquaintances and various well known personalities in our community have
died. Generally they have been in their late 70s or 80s. Though our Jewish
Aged homes have fared fairly well as things have been very
strictly controlled.

I watch CNN regularly so hear constantly what is going on where you are and
it sounds like a balagan!!! Not to mention your elections and outgoing
President!!!!! It is like a soap opera.

So lets hope that 2021 will bring us something better. What can I say?

Just keep safe and well every one, Veronica
