** “Writing with Many Pens”
Incunabula and post-incunabula from the National Library of Israel and the
Jewish Public Library
------------------------------------------------------------
Montreal, February 12, 2021 – As a result of their convergent cultural agendas
to deepen Jewish literacy, the National Library of Israel and the Jewish Public
Library in Montreal will be collaborating on a series of events that will open
our respective collections and programmes to an international audience.
Our first event will be a rare books workshop called “Writing with Many Pens”:
incunabula and post-incunabula from the National Library of Israel and the
Jewish Public Library, taking place on Sunday March 21st noon (EST) via Zoom.
Incunabula (or cradle printing) represent the earliest printed books within the
first 50 years of Gutenberg’s printing press. Most medieval rabbis came to
embrace this radical invention, calling it the “miracle of writing with many
pens”.
As part the Jewish Public Library’s ongoing rare books workshop initiative,
which began in 2014, this collaboration with the National Library of Israel
celebrates the imminent completion of their new headquarters in Jerusalem
scheduled for later this year. Librarians from both institutions will be
presenting the earliest texts from their respective collections, accompaned by
stories from the history of early print culture that exemplifies the transition
from the scriptorium, where books were copied by hand, to automated print shops
that signalled the beginnings of mass media.

Dr. Yoel Finkelman (National Library of Israel) is curator of the Haim and
Hanna Solomon Judaica Collection at the National Library of Israel. Formerly a
lecturer at Bar-Ilan Unviersity, Midreshet Lindenbaum, and MMY, he is author of
“Strictly Kosher Reading: Popular Literature and the Condition of Contemporary
Orthodoxy” as well as numerous articles on contemporary religious culture in
Israel and the United States.
Eddie Paul (Jewish Public Library) developed the Rare Books Initiative in 2014
to mark the JPL’s centennial year. In the Spring of that year, he co-curated
the exhibit of the rare books, “A Roomful of Dwellings”, and 2 years later,
co-curated the exhibit, “Decanting Memory” in a collaboration with the Jacob
Lowy Collection of Library & Archives Canada. He developed the workshop
programme which has been offered to elementary and high schools, colleges and
universities, synagogues, churches, community centres, and seniors homes.
Nicole Beaudry (Jewish Public Library) worked at the Jewish Public Library for
6 years as a reference librarian, archivist and children’s librarian. Her
extensive research on the provenance and printing histories of the Jewish
Public Library’s rare book collection has shaped the workshop initiative. She
has a specific interest in the roles of women in the history of the Jewish
printing industry.
