This comment was posted on the RA rabbinic listserv about Rabbi Dov Peretz Elkin's recent book, 'Bialik: Israel's National Poet.' - Chaim Mazo

Our teacher and friend Dov Elkins has a new book, 'Bialik: Israel's National Poet.' Speaking rabbi to rabbi (though speaking  ultimately only for myself), I find our unfamiliarity with Bialik to be a regrettable gap in our seminary education.  We all know that he was  the national poet of the rebirth of our people.  We all benefit from his co-authorship of Sefer HaAgadah.  Yet for the most part, we never actually studied anything about him.

Bialik's achievements are celebrated (for those who care about such matters) across the entire spectrum of the Jewish people.  But I  personally feel that we in the Conservative camp are particular heirs to  the intellectual and spiritual commitments of Hayyim Nahman Bialik.  I’m  suggesting that he’s "one of us.”

I’ve read Dov’s  book.  It’s just right for us to learn (or to refresh)  our knowledge of Bialik, and the book is a gem for teaching.

Full disclosure: Neither Dov nor anyone else asked me to comment on the book.  I do confess to have benefitted from Dov’s rich material for over  40 years…but I believe that the only /chidush /in that disclosure is/the  length of time/ that I’ve been borrowing from Dov’s output.  We’ve all  benefitted from Dov's  wisdom!
