Hi! My Jewish young professionals book club is looking into ways to diversify our readings. I have heard of book clubs that assign monthly themes ahead of time so not all books are about the Holocaust or not all books are 'chicklit.' (These are the two biggest recurring themes in our club and it has dissuaded a few long-time members from attending recently while others of course love these genres.) I am not in charge of the club, just looking at ways to propose some changes to retain membership. Each month someone chooses a book and leads a discussion. It's democratic in that way and I want that to stick, but I would like to hear about book clubs that consider a rotating theme each month in their picks (maybe more mizrahi/sephardi stories, Jewish history that is not the Holocaust, etc.)
*If you have best practices for diversifying your book club picks, I would love to know about them. * Thank you, Danielle
