Dear Safranim,

The New York Public Library is pleased to announce the
Diamonstein-Spielvogel Fellowship Program to support advanced research at
the Center for Research in the Humanities, located in the Library’s
flagship Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. Fellowships are open to Ph.D.
candidates, post-Doctoral scholars, and independent researchers studying
the humanities and the history, literature, and culture of peoples
represented throughout the collections housed at the Schwarzman Building.
Projects requiring access to original materials including special
collections, photography, prints, and maps will be given preference, but
all worthy projects in history and the humanities will be considered.
Applicants working in the visual, auditory/performing, and literary arts
are welcome to apply. Projects focused on science, technology, psychology,
public policy, education, and other areas are eligible, but only if the
proposed project is centered on typically humanities-related methodologies.

Established with the generous support of the Diamonstein-Spielvogel
Foundation, the Fellowship Program will support five Diamonstein-Spielvogel
Fellows (with a total of 26 fellowships awarded over five years) for four
concurrent months during the academic year with a stipend of $26,000.

An example of the applicant's research (e.g. article or book chapter)
Two professional letters of recommendation

Selection Criteria:

Applications will be reviewed by a Selection Committee composed of
curators, librarians, and expert senior Library staff. They will consider
several criteria, including:

Qualifications of the applicant
Quality and feasibility of the project plan
Relationship of the project to the humanities
Relationship of the project to the resources of the Schwarzman Building

Fellowship Terms:

Fellows are granted a quiet, reserved workspace in the Center for Research
in the Humanities and full access to the Library’s collections and digital
resources. During the first week of their arrival, Fellows will receive an
orientation to the Library and will receive ongoing guidance in their
research from the Library’s expert curators, librarians, and staff, upon
request. Beyond daily research and writing, fellows are invited into NYPL’s
broader intellectual life anchored at the Center by attending or
collaborating with staff on research programs such as Doc Chat, Work/Cited,
or Works in Progress sessions.

As part of the Library’s educational mission and the Diamonstein-Spielvogel
Foundation’s commitment to expanding knowledge in the humanities more
broadly, and to provide Fellows with public platforms for their scholarship
and research, each Fellow will be required to participate in at least two
outreach activities to share their project, work, or expertise in a public
forum. These may take the form of an onsite or virtual program, lecture,
collections tour, panel discussion, or approved original presentation, at
the Library’s discretion. The Library will also support fellows in writing
guest posts for NYPL’s blog, and when appropriate, collaborate with fellows
to organize a research symposium centered on their project focus.
