Description
To provide the leadership and expertise required to ensure that the Sager 
Solomon Schechter library is aligned with the mission of the school and is an 
integral and integrated component of the school’s instructional program.

The Librarian has the primary responsibility for the functions of the school 
library (i.e., evaluation and selection; ordering and processing; utilization 
of media; and the instructional role, which includes both formal and informal 
instruction in library skills as well as assistance to students and staff in 
locating, evaluating and using library materials).

An essential responsibility is to establish positive relationships with 
students, to motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge 
needed to provide a good foundation for K-8 grade education in accordance with 
each student’s ability, to establish good relationships with parents and other 
staff members; to assist in school programs subject to the SSDS Mission which 
states:

“At Solomon Schechter Day School of Metropolitan Chicago, we ignite our 
students’ Jewish souls, educate them to their highest potential, and empower 
them to use their knowledge,
skills, and creativity to enrich our world. “

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Duties of this job include, but are not limited to:

As a teacher, the school librarian empowers students to become critical 
thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of 
information. The library program is essential to learning and teaching and must 
be fully integrated into the curriculum to promote students’ achievement of 
learning goals and objectives. The school librarian supports students’ success 
by guiding them in:

  *    Reading for understanding, pleasure, and the exploration of diverse 
viewpoints and genres.
  *    Accessing, evaluating, and communicating information regardless of 
format.
  *   Instructing students and staff in information literacy skills, including 
reading for understanding, the research process, engaging inquiry, 
collaboration, critical thinking, developing multiple literacies, and 
understanding copyright, fair use, and licensing of intellectual property.

Administrative Duties

  *   Developing and maintaining a collection of resources appropriate to the 
curriculum, the learners, and the teaching styles and instructional strategies 
of the school community.
  *   Producing school library reports, budget requests, bibliographies, and 
other documents related to the functional operations of the school library.
  *   Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the school day.
  *   Create and maintain a school library center that provides a teaching and 
learning environment that is inviting, safe, readily accessible, and conducive 
to student learning.
  *   Instruct students and staff in the most effective use of the library.
  *   Excellence in classifying, cataloging, processing, storage, and 
circulation of materials.
  *   Cooperating and networking with other libraries, librarians, and agencies 
to provide access to resources beyond the school library.
  *   Familiarity with national and state standards for information and 
technology literacy, including Illinois Association of School Library Educators 
and American Association of School Librarians (AASL) standards.
  *   Establish annual and long-term measurable goals for the school library 
program that are aligned with the district and school mission and objectives.
  *   Develop and maintain a collection of resources appropriate to the 
curriculum, students, and teaching and learning styles inherent within the 
school community.
  *   Maintain frequent and timely communication with stakeholders through an 
effective online school library media program presence and other formats such 
as presentations, e-mail, newsletters, reports, and articles.
  *   Sharing with the school community and adhering to collaboratively 
developed and up-to-date district policies concerning issues such as materials 
selection, circulation, reconsideration of materials, copyright, privacy, and 
acceptable use.
  *   Advocating for school library programs and the school library profession

Colleagues
Collaborating with teachers to design and teach engaging lessons and 
assessments that incorporate multiple literacies and foster critical thinking.

Assisting staff in the selection, evaluation, and use of resources, including 
Internet-based resources.

Participating in the implementation of collaboratively planned lessons by 
providing group and individual instruction, assessing student progress, and 
evaluating activities to incorporate classroom objectives and 
information/digital literacy skills.

Partnering with the school community to create meaningful experiences and 
opportunities to promote a love of reading and lifelong learning.

Providing and/or planning professional development opportunities in the use of 
new school library services within the school for staff.

Reports To: Director of Educational Technology

Requirements
Bachelor’s degree inrelated subject from an accredited university.
Illinois teaching certificate preferred.
Experience is preferred but not necessary for hiring.
