(From Rabbi Jonathan Guttentag, Manchester, UK. - DJB)
I saw this in Meshech Chochmo (Rav Meir Simcha of Dvinsk's 1843–1926) to Parshas Lech lecho El ha’aretz asher areka Normally translated and understood To the land which I will show you He renders as: To the land where I will display the strengths that are buried hidden within you So that they are displayed to all - to serve as a source of inspiration strength and guidance to all mankind (Hebrew explains how he made this interpretation – DJB) So likewise the trials and tribulations of the Jewish people Could be seen as an opportunity for their resilience and their persistence of faith to be displayed to mankind – to act as an exemplar and inspiration to mankind A high school senior is interested in why God tests Jews in general, and possibly any individual, but she's hoping for something written more recently than the medieval Bible commentaries. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
