Kugel and Frijoles: Latino Jews in the United States (A Long Island Library
Resources Council program)
Wednesday, November 10, 2021
11AM PT / 2:00PM ET / 9:00PM Israel Time
Kugel and Frijoles: Latino Jews in the United States analyzes the changing
construction of race and ethnicity in the United States through the lens of
contemporary Jewish immigrants from Latin America. Since Latino Jews are not
easily classified within the U.S. racial and ethnic schema, their ethnic
identity and group affiliation challenge existing paradigms. Join author Laura
Limonic, Assistant Professor of Sociology at the College of Old Westbury of the
State University of New York, for this important discussion. This program is
presented by the Long Island Library Resources Council, which is offering
complimentary registration for AJL members. Register at

AJL Classroom: Programming & Outreach for Synagogue Libraries
Mondays, November 15 & 22, 2021
4:30PM PT / 7:30PM ET (90 minutes)
$150 nonmembers / $75 members
Instructor: Rachel Kamin
We are the People of the Book and the library should be the central hub of the
synagogue, supporting the clergy, faculty, and staff; the preschool, religious
school, and camp; and the congregational and larger community. Explore various
programming and outreach ideas that can connect the entire synagogue community
to the library and learn how to partner with other synagogue professionals and
lay leaders to expand the library’s reach and relevance. We’ll learn together
from our past successes and failures, brainstorm ways to strengthen our
existing efforts, and develop innovative and engaging new initiatives. Members
and nonmembers welcome.

RAS Roundtable: Digital Humanities Clinic #3
Thursday, November 18, 2021
9:30AM PT / 12:30PM ET / 7:30PM Israel Time
During this workshop, AJL’s Michelle Margolis Chesner will discuss the project
“Footprints: Jewish Books Through Time and Place,” a database to track the
circulation of printed “Jewish books.” Footprints connects pieces of
information about the movement of early printed books to each other in order to
build up a composite view of the movement of Jewish texts and ideas from place
to place and across time. Workshop participants will have the chance to learn
about the conceptual and methodological development of the project, and discuss
with the presenter. This roundtable is sponsored by AJL’s RAS Division and all
members are welcome. Members only.

RAS Cataloging Forum: The LC classifications of BM vs. KBM
Tuesday, November 23, 2021
9:30AM PT / 12:30PM ET / 7:30PM Israel Time
Cataloging law and law related material can be challenging, even more so when
the topics are marriage, divorce, and dinai mamanot (Jewish financial law).
Does the cataloger classify Jewish marriage under BM713 or KBM546.13; would
Jewish divorce be classed under BM713.5 or KBM562.3; would a book on Jewish
financial law be classed under BM509.E27 or KBM639? What is the difference
between BM and KBM? This forum, led by Aaron Kuperman, will help provide
working knowledge of the two classes. This forum is sponsored by AJL’s RAS
Cataloging Committee and all members are welcome. Members only.
