Tayere fraynt un khaveyrim -
Dear friends -
I'm writing from CYCO / ציקאָ, an 80-year-old Yiddish literary and
cultural organization in New York City. With a group of younger folks,
we've done a very successful fundraiser this spring to keep CYCO's doors
open and to do some much-needed infrastructure work.
That starts with fully cataloging our collection of books (and pamphlets
and other ephemera) for the first time, so that we can act as a reading
room and learning space (and know for sure what extra copies we can make
available for sale).
So: What ILS would you recommend we use?
(And why, if you've got a moment to explain!)
The collection is around 2500 shelf-feet - we think over 50,000 items,
and we're guessing over 3000 titles (CYCO is also a publisher, so we
have many copies of books that we've put out). It's almost entirely
Yiddish-language material, with a very small scattering in other
languages, and a slightly larger scattering of bilingual works.
The aim is to catalog and inventory everything, separate out the
multiples that we can sell, and set up the core collection as an
open-stacks reading room. So ease of use is important, on the back end
for catalogers with a range of experience levels, and also in the user
interface (both on a computer in the space and for online access). But
it'll also be important for us to be able to easily work in both
alphabets in our records, and to have robust metadata, notes, &c (also
largely in Yiddish).
Many thanks for whatever advice you can give! We are enthusiastic book
people, but mostly with quite limited experience with formal library
systems.
A hartsikn dank,
Rosza Lang/Levitsky
for CYCO and Friends of CYCO
