Dear colleagues, I posted here a while back asking for advice about how to grow the pitiful number of attendees for my wonderful Temple book club. One of the excellent pieces of advice offered was to have an author as a draw. I didn't want to do that because I was worried we would have so few people that it would not be worth the author's time. But then I got an email from author Sharon Hart-Green -- someone on this list told her about my book club (thank you!) and she offered to come! So for months we have been looking forward to her visit, and it's this Sunday. Now that you know the backstory, here's the invite:
Sharon Hart-Green will join us from Toronto to talk about her riveting novel, *Come Back for Me*, winner of the 2021 Firebird Award for Historical Fiction. All are welcome whether you’ve read the book, plan to read it, or just want to learn more. Sharon has taught Hebrew and Yiddish Literature at the University of Toronto. She is also a translator. Read about Sharon and her work on her website: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.sharonhartgreen.com/__;!!KGKeukY!wHbxP4GqgBDiu9pAYMW1V9hydt0nU1WiFdyhsWJzoAFIpfIDq188THFfEifBtnvuTUKI0r7vMjvpiMpVCIuRdDgXCan_$ . The session will not be recorded; though this is a virtual book club, we are all about live interaction. If you’d like to attend, email me at libr...@sephardictemple.org (or agoldsmith....@gmail.com) so I can send you the Zoom link. Your friends are welcome too – just let me know if they’d like to come. If you’ve never joined a Zoom meeting before, I’m happy to walk you through it before we meet. *Please note*: The May meeting will begin at 1:00 p.m. PT/4:00 p.m. ET as usual. Sharon will join us at 1:30/4:30 so we have time for a bit of regular book- sharing first. This consists of just talking about whatever we've been reading, for any age, Jewish or not. It's really fun! I will conclude by saying that before, I wrote to you in desperation. Now I think the book club is on more secure footing. From my usual distribution list I have so far had seven rsvps (including two new members who responded to my original request on Hasafran and are now regulars!). I think five of us will have read the book -- not a requirement but really nice for the author. So since Hasafran had a hand in shoring up the book club I would particularly love for you to join us, if you are free Sunday afternoon, would maybe like to share what you've been reading, and appreciate hearing from an author whose characters (from Holocaust-era Hungary and sixties Toronto) will stay with you. I'm attaching the flyer with a little more detail. Shabbat Shalom!
