Overview

As one of the nation's largest public library systems with a network of 61
neighborhood libraries, Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is committed to
providing the borough's 2.7 million people quality services and a vibrant
learning environment through diverse and multi-ethnic educational and
cultural programs for people of all ages.



The Librarian Trainee reports directly to one of six Regional Directors and
will work as part of a team of 10 public libraries to provide quality
public service to the entire community. The Librarian Trainee will be
trained by a mix of Library Managers and Librarian Age-level specialists within
the Region to conduct programs and outreach, to maintain the collection,
and to provide reference services. The Librarian Trainee will work to meet
the reference, programming and outreach needs of the region while gaining a
comprehensive understanding of the needs and operations of the Brooklyn
Public Library system.



* Employment in this title requires that you receive an MLS (MLIS) degree
from an ALA accredited library school within 3 years of appointment to this
position. Upon completion of the MLIS degree, Librarian Trainees will be
promoted into a Librarian position.  The Librarian Trainee is a union
position with a salary range between $43,390 - $46,625, which is dependant
upon the number of credits earned towards the Masters Degree.
Responsibilities

   - Assist patrons with reference information and reader’s advisory for
   all age groups utilizing print and electronic resources
   - Plan, conduct and evaluate appropriate programming for the community.

   - Assist in weeding designated areas of collection following established
   schedule and criteria
   - Visit neighborhood organizations, community meetings and participate
   in community affairs promoting Brooklyn Public Library services,
   collections and programs
   - Assist with holds/reserves and other circulation-related requests
   - Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

   - BA/BS Degree from a US recognized accredited institution
   - Experience working with the public and diverse communities with a
   demonstrated knowledge, respect and sensitivity toward diverse cultures
   represented in Brooklyn
   - Experience providing public programming is desirable
   - Familiarity with basic library principles and the mission and vision of
   the Brooklyn Public Library
   - Excellent customer service and communication skills (oral & written)
   - Candidates must be flexible, able to handle multiple competing
   priorities and tasks,
   adaptable to change and able to work effectively in a fast-paced,
   high-volume
   environment
   - Bilingual skills highly desirable
   - Required to work evenings and weekends and at multiple locations as
   needed
