This is not a usual librarian’s post but it does have to do with networking. A
friend is looking for a kidney match. Please circulate to your contacts.
Thanks, Gail

Posting for a friend:

Dear family, friends, colleagues, loved ones, family friends, and former
colleagues:

Alan's story: Alan received a kidney donation about nine years ago. In late
March 2021, he got very sick and his body rejected the kidney. He has been on
dialysis ever since and needs a new one to live life to its fullest extent
again. We continue to find ourselves looking for a good kidney match for him
for the actual transplant.

How to Help

1) Email or have a chat with one, two, or just three people about our
story-.consider passing along this email to close contacts you know in New
York City and surrounding area. Please, though, don't plaster on Facebook.
Something targeted would be best, as we're still trying to maintain a modicum
of privacy in this difficult journey.
· Have a parent involved in her synagogue that can tell others?
· Have a neighbor who is a giving person?
· Any altruistic cousins, nieces, nephews?
· What about a former colleague, former customer who is involved in the
community?
· Think creatively. You'd be surprised who'd be willing to do something like
this for a stranger!
*** For anyone you talk to that seems interested, give them the information
below:

2) Renewal is an organization that helps coordinate the testing for donating
within the Jewsh community; they have been amazing in getting the last donor
but need help finding a new match. We are so fortunate for this incredible
organization in Brooklyn called
Renewal<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.renewal.org/__;!!KGKeukY!xDQVSvbvryFGmNpXOC8NY0MB3y0-g-S2bLzf4CkhnSKnG-hFBdSxTKFhG6K9aK36eKaL6pyKALwszBYA$
  > that helps the community donate to other Jews in need. One can find more
about them on their twitter profile
here<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://twitter.com/renewalnews?lang=en__;!!KGKeukY!xDQVSvbvryFGmNpXOC8NY0MB3y0-g-S2bLzf4CkhnSKnG-hFBdSxTKFhG6K9aK36eKaL6pyKAPpKzMy-$
  >. Because of their resources, this the highest likelihood avenue for him
getting one soon and that is an excellent, biological match. For any willing
folks in this community that would want to donate to him -- contact Renewal for
testing. Anyone interested or curious about donating can go to Renewal and say
they want to donate to Alan J. Finkelsten.

3) Someone can see if they're a direct match through his hospital, or, there is
now an option where someone can donate through a paired donation -- meaning the
donor doesn't have to be a genetic match to Alan whatsoever -- and because this
creates a donation chain, this avenue saves even more lives in the process.
· For direct donation, to see if you are a match to donate directly, all you
have to preliminarily do is fill out a quick Columbia Hospital form; scroll
down and click 'I Want to Donate My
Kidney<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://columbiasurgery.org/kidney-transplant__;!!KGKeukY!xDQVSvbvryFGmNpXOC8NY0MB3y0-g-S2bLzf4CkhnSKnG-hFBdSxTKFhG6K9aK36eKaL6pyKAOHzVuMr$
  >.' In the form, note his name (Alan Finkelstein) and birthday (6/5/91). They
will mail a kit for a small blood sample that can be taken to a Quest
Diagnostics.
· For an indirect donation, one can give to someone else in a sort of exchange
for a person that is a great match to give theirs in a paired swap. I have been
coordinating with the Alliance for Paired Kidney
Donation<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://paireddonation.org/__;!!KGKeukY!xDQVSvbvryFGmNpXOC8NY0MB3y0-g-S2bLzf4CkhnSKnG-hFBdSxTKFhG6K9aK36eKaL6pyKAMcz-n-l$
  > (APKD) for the past year to get them linked up at Alan's Hospital, and they
are finalizing that paperwork this month. (Since I am not a direct match, this
would be my only option.) But, this APKD might not have the right pairs in
their system where my kidney would, when exchanged, get Alan the best kidney in
return. Thus, the more people that try in this process, the better. (Did I
mention Al Roth, Nobel economist, created their matching
algorithm<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://theconversation.com/how-economics-can-help-save-lives-a-conversation-with-alvin-roth-2012-nobel-prize-laureate-123536__;!!KGKeukY!xDQVSvbvryFGmNpXOC8NY0MB3y0-g-S2bLzf4CkhnSKnG-hFBdSxTKFhG6K9aK36eKaL6pyKAErEAZBV$
  >? Great minds.)

· I'm available morning day evening and night. Any interested donor should not
hesitate to contact me with any questions whatsoever about the process, about
how to go about getting paid time off for surgery and recovery and
reimbursement of lost wages, to find out what happens if you needed a kidney
one day after donation (you'd be first on the list), how I'd thank you for the
rest of my life, or anything. Call, text, email, or carrier pigeon me anytime.
My Favorite Person
As we approach Alan's 31st birthday this weekend, I'm resolute in that I won't
stop trying various avenues until we can live our beautiful life together. No
one should have to live like this with no end in sight. He is going to do
amazing, brilliant things in this world and save a lot of lives when he becomes
an MD/PhD. But even more, possibly, than that is that I can say unequivocally:
he is the best person I know. His compassion, honesty, determination,
curiosity, caring heart, willingness to learn from mistakes and acknowledge
them, help those around him grow, encourage and challenge me, and so much more
makes the world, my world, an infinitely better place for those in his orbit
just simply because he is in it.

Sincerely,
Team Alan/Lauren
