The Antics of the “Chestnut” Cantor and His Singing Assistants

Tuesday, November 8, 2022 10:00 PT/ 1:00 EST / 20:00 Israel

The most renowned cantor in Europe ca. 1820 was Cantor Salomon, known as
Kashtan (“Chestnut”). With an entourage of students and apprentices, he
traveled from place to place, officiating at religious services and singing on
demand for private patrons. An historically significant biography of Kashtan,
written by his son, Cantor Hirsch Weintraub, enables us to view the assistant
singers not only at work, but also behind the scenes. We even see them taking
action to protect Kashtan from jealous and incompetent competitors. On one
especially notable occasion, they heroically defend the honor of their mentor
in quite comical fashion! This talk will bring us new insights into these
quintessential, but enigmatic liturgical performers from 200 years ago. We will
also take a look at one of Kashtan’s virtuosic vocal compositions.
