The exhibition, curated by David Sclar, will also feature other exceptional Maimonides materials, including synagogue objects from Cairo from the period when Maimonides lived there as well as medieval and early modern manuscripts and rare priming from other collections. See below for a project summary. We are planning the exhibition as a way to bring together intellectual history, book history, and reception history. Following the trajectory of the most influential Jewish thinker in the last thousand years, we will be able to present the vagaries of world and Jewish history and culture, offering expansive views and taking deep dives. We think that this exhibition could be a great choice for other institutions and audiences, and we wanted to see if you might consider serving as a travel venue. The exhibition will close in New York City in December 2023 and will be available thereafter. Philosopher, jurist, physician, and communal leader--and glorified as the "Great Eagle"--he produced a writings on law, theology, medicine, and philosophy, each of which has had immeasurable reach and attained canonical status. This exhibition explores Maimonides's authority and impact through disparate eras and geopolitical spheres: the Islamic and Mediterranean contexts in which he lived and toiled; displays of both conflict and collegiality between protagonists of the three related monotheistic faiths; the interplay between science, medicine, and philosophy; and the reception and appropriation of his image by modern thinkers. We present Maimonides across continents and eras, through spiritual, economic, and social change, to demonstrate how one person was utilized and served as a catalyst over the past eight hundred years. We explore the teachings of the sage, his cultural milieu in medieval Spain, Morocco, and Egypt, and then consider his lasting impact over generations. We see how Maimonides was understood, how his teachings were interpreted, reshaped, or challenged, and how communities worldwide claimed and established their own identity as his rightful heirs. We examine this through a lens of materiality--through manuscripts and rare books, and also through art, visual and popular culture.
