The Ashkenazi prohibition against eating QiTNiot <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://translate.google.co.il/?hl=en&tab=rT&sl=iw&tl=en&text=**K&op=translate__;16fXmNeg15nXldeq!!KGKeukY!wV5KuJAJRNHoovTnVhVYVJk0EQAhSvStf4UIGSD5TV9tcJRyTAdW4uWDonDVyEHMFOd_CHysLmBMv95hYwb6NsY$ > on Pesach began in FRanCe (a reversal of TZaRFat) in the 1200s. This prohibition constituted a psycholinguistic distancing of oneself from GoSHeN, the bean-shaped kidney (< qitniot) on an anthropomorphic map of Aphrodite (Afro-deity). The ancient shin had a dental D/T-sound, e.g., SHoR = ox was ToR as in Taurus. The gimel often had a K-sound in other languages, e.g., GaMaL = camel. So, GoSHeN sounded like QTN, as in QiTNiot = beans. Cotton (Arabic qutn) was exported from Goshen. The Latin genus for cotton is Gossypium < Goshen. Compare English gossamer = cotton + sea (the foam you see on the beach). Aphrodite (< Greek αφρός aphros = foam) was a goddess in Goshen. The philosophical question is: If one knows the reason for this prohibition, are they more or less duty-bound to observe it? I don't know the answer.
Phoenician anthropomorphic maps covered all of the area involved in the Exodus from Egypt (< Greek hepat- = liver), so they may be an appropriate topic for discussion at the seder table.
