Hi! I have a question about decorative book bindings/covers. I work at Special Collections at UW-Madison, and while we don't have a large Judaica collection, we do have a few interesting items. One of my colleagues pulled a few 17th-century Hebrew books for a class visit today, and we noticed that the covers seem to be covered in similar decorative paper. They weren't acquired at the same time (one of them is a stack transfer from the circulating collection; the others were purchased from book dealers, not sure if they came from the same dealer).
We're curious about why these three books are all covered in similar floral paper. Does anyone know if/when/where it was common to cover or re-bind books with this kind of design? Could these three books have been covered/rebound in the same place before they all, separately, made their way to UW-Madison? I couldn't attach pictures, but you can see them in this Google Drive folder: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1I5LERTGpt-_VxSHxr3Q3Zh7T_vJtO0dG?usp=sharing__;!!KGKeukY!xYZgNV7v4rtkobav0wbtwerLrz4v9AiCzBunRrKAVZZwJnfAzGIgYlgBysqw-kCi8YZSXX1VQE8_nobbMAugPg$ Here are the links to the items in our library catalog: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://search.library.wisc.edu/catalog/999920873202121__;!!KGKeukY!xYZgNV7v4rtkobav0wbtwerLrz4v9AiCzBunRrKAVZZwJnfAzGIgYlgBysqw-kCi8YZSXX1VQE8_noZegXqgKg$ https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://search.library.wisc.edu/catalog/999561574402121__;!!KGKeukY!xYZgNV7v4rtkobav0wbtwerLrz4v9AiCzBunRrKAVZZwJnfAzGIgYlgBysqw-kCi8YZSXX1VQE8_noYFtJcQBw$ https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://search.library.wisc.edu/catalog/999561868602121__;!!KGKeukY!xYZgNV7v4rtkobav0wbtwerLrz4v9AiCzBunRrKAVZZwJnfAzGIgYlgBysqw-kCi8YZSXX1VQE8_noYqK20azw$ Sincerely, Samantha Samantha Garlock, MLIS, MS Cataloging Specialist for Distinctive Collections University of Wisconsin-Madison Memorial Library she/her/hers
