Dear HaSafran, I am thrilled to announce the publication of my book, which may be of interest:
*Kyle Dugdale, Architecture After God (Basel: Birkhäuser, 2023)* now available <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://birkhauser.com/books/9783035625028__;!!KGKeukY!xxWOl2a85d1n5JKO_i_FXUI6Ooc1KS8SD7l7Tj0CsU95xKLnjtlcpOB2U1j90NYeiYMyhIRifkgyz95XSR7A_VkCGPo$ > A vivid retelling of the biblical story of Babel leads from the contested site of Babylon to the soaring towers of the modern metropolis, and sets the bright hopes of early modernism against the shadows of gathering war. Dealing in structural metaphor, utopian aspiration, and geopolitical ambition, Dugdale exposes the inexorable architectural implications of the event described by Nietzsche as the death of God. The book's fabric is woven around two continuous threads: the familiar account of the Tower of Babel, read in the context of distinctly modern anxieties; and the less familiar story of its retelling in a slim but lavishly illustrated volume by the artist Uriel Birnbaum, entitled *Der Kaiser und der Architekt* (Thyrsos Verlag, 1924). The youngest son of Nathan Birnbaum, Uriel contributed to a brief flowering of the book arts within 1920s Jewish culture in Vienna. But his story, which is also a scathing critique of modernity and its pieties, never reached its intended readership. Soon after its publication, the 1923 winner of Austria's top literary award fell into an oblivion from which his work is only now beginning to emerge. This book sets his work in conversation with the larger movements of twentieth-century architectural thought. Kind regards, *Kyle Dugdale *AIA Senior Critic, Yale School of Architecture
