AJL and Nice Jewish Books Present:
Everything Old (in Yiddish) Is New Again: Trends in Recent Translation of
Yiddish Fiction
Sunday, September 3, 2023
noon PT / 3:00 pm ET

While the body of Yiddish literature is vast, many people still think of Tevye
the milkman, trudging along with his lame horse and arguing with God. But the
many new translations of Yiddish fiction show the breadth and depth of the
settings, characters, and topics covered as well as the many different voices
of the authors. Join us for a panel discussion with Yiddish- to-English
translators Ellen Cassedy, Mindy Liberman, and Yermiyahu Ahron Taub about
recent trends and about their work.

Ellen Cassedy was a founder and longtime leader of 9 to 5, the national
association of women office workers. Ellen is also a Yiddishist and is the
co-translator of Oedipus in Brooklyn and Other Stories by Blume Lempel and
translator of On the Landing: Stories by Yenta Mash.

Mindy Liberman is the translator of Falik and His House, a novella by Jacob
Dinezon, published by Jewish Storyteller Press, 2022. She has translated
articles and other material relating to Dinezon, as well as poems by Miriam
Ulinover. Her translation of Dinezon's story “A Foolish Child” is scheduled to
appear in the next issue of In geveb. Mindy grew up in Montreal and was a
librarian at the Glendale (California) Public Library for many years.

Yermiyahu Ahron Taub is a poet, writer, and Yiddish literary translator. He is
the author of two books of fiction, Beloved Comrades: a Novel in Stories (2020)
and Prodigal Children in the House of G-d: Stories (2018), and six volumes of
poetry, including A Mouse Among Tottering Skyscrapers: Selected Yiddish Poems
(2017). Yermiyahu's most recent translation from the Yiddish is Dineh: an
Autobiographical Novel by Ida Maze (2022). Please visit his website at
