Hi Diane,

You can use the book tape on the spine. If the tape isn’t wide enough, you can first overlay two strips,  sticky side up, to create a wider strip. I believe you might even need three for a Etz Hayim humash. Make sure you make them long enough to turn it and have a half inch on the inside. You have to make slits in the piece you turn so you don’t tape up the text block.

Demco and Talas sell book repair supplies.

Don’t cover the whole book in laminate. Don’t use book tape on a rare book either!

Hope this explanation was clear enough as I am writing this on the fly while traveling in Israel.

Hello colleagues,

I've been asked to help with the repair of siddurim and chumshim (the Etz Chaim chumashim are taking a beating) at my synagogue.  The only supplies I currently have in stock are 3 inch clear book tape and some repair corners.

Fortunately, there's another volunteer who has been doing much of the work.  She wasn't available when the call came to repair a tikkun that was barely attached to the spine.  I did the best I could with limited resources and am now looking for advice.

Some questions:

Should we continue to just use tape on the spines?
Should we buy rolls of laminate to cover the entire damaged book?
What other supplies should we get (hinge tape, cloth book tape, etc.)?

Thanks so much for your suggestions!

Diane
