Hi Ellie and Chaim Hasafran, I have some friends who experienced some of the October 7 and related events. (They live in Ashkelon and Tel Aviv [plus Jerusalem, etc.] ) Some of your (Chaim's) letter suggests you would want to get information from people who experienced it. But then you limit your request to "Websites . . . Twitter/Instragram, . . . Digital ephemera/fliers, and emails of public statements " I am concerned that you spread your net too narrowly. Implicitly you are not interested in emails sent just privately, even though for many of those writers had no means readily came to mind. (e.g., he lists just "public statements", not private ones). I just checked on emails I have received Can you let me know whether you would like a set of emails from my Ashkelon, et al, friends. (For ex: while Charlie Libicki "fled" to Jerusalem, he returned to Ashkelon to check and to retrieve things from his home. He reported on some of the damage he noted in the neighboring houses, etc. Aside from some of the dry facts, his emails contain some dry humor that also shed light: E.g., " Ages hence, archaeologists will find dirty dishes in our sink and infer that the family left in a panic. Not quite a panic, but the bus schedules online were confusing and contradictory, so we wanted to hit the road with plenty of leeway. Happily, the Jerusalem bus arrived at the stop exactly as scheduled and was nearly empty. "
I include one comment of his (in response to another comment): " Biden’s support for Israel’s orgy of revenge against the Palestinians in Gaza in the aftermath of Hamas’ truly horrendous attack on Israeli civilians has reminded me that when it comes to Democrats and Republicans, the lesser evil is still evil. I am under no illusion that Israel will be able to “eliminate” Hamas, its ostensible goal, but it will succeed in entirely wiping out extended Palestinian families, killing and injuring thousands upon thousands of Palestinian woman and children, and displacing close to a million Palestinian civilians ” Charlie responded: “ There's a lot of discourse along the lines of "We've seen this movie before, and we know how it ends" Here's why this movie is different: Hamas has made it crystal clear what they would do if they could. So we owe it not only to today's victims, but also to tomorrow's victims to make sure that they can't. Deterrence is no longer an option. ” Let me know if you want me to forward Charlie Libicki's other emails beyond the above excerpt. Recognizing the significance of online communication in today's context, we are documenting these unfolding events for historical preservation . For more than a decade, the National Library of Israel (NLI) has been deeply involved in "internet harvesting," focusing on collecting digitally-born media from websites and social media platforms. In the past year, our efforts have significantly expanded, leveraging tools such as Archive-It for web crawling and Web Recorder for social media content archiving . Our current scope of work involves archiving a diverse range of online content, encompassing websites and social media accounts in Israel and abroad, providing a comprehensive documentation of events in Israel and Jewish communities worldwide. To accomplish this, we have a dedicated taskforce within the library that actively documents online spaces and collaborates with various war documentation projects . In Israel, we are building a national repository of oral and written testimonies , and massive collection of video materials, together with dozens of grassroots collection efforts, for long-term preservation and access. We also offer professional and legal guidance, technical support, and facilitating communication and collaboration among these initiatives. We are eager to establish similar collaborative efforts with Jewish communities and organizations globally . This is where your invaluable assistance comes in: 1. Websites: Please recommend Jewish websites that relate (even broadly) to the current conflict – by sending URLs to [ mailto:webarch...@nli.org.il | webarch...@nli.org.il ] . 2. Twitter and Instagram: If you encounter noteworthy posts or influential accounts on Twitter/X or Instagram, simply tag us so that we can document these contributions . You can find us on: Twitter/X @WebArchiveNLI Instagram #SwordsofironNLI 1. Digital ephemera/fliers: Please forward them to the [ mailto:webarch...@nli.org.il | webarch...@nli.org.il ] 2. Emails of public statements are being collected by the Berman Archive at Stanford U. – please send them to [ mailto:thebermanarch...@gmail.com | thebermanarch...@gmail.com ] Your collaboration and contributions will significantly aid our collective efforts in preserving these historical records for future generations .
