There's a wonderful book set in Spain in the countdown years to the Expulsion of 1492: A Ceiling Made of Eggshells. by Gail Carson Levine. The history is really well done, very atmospheric and not too heavy-handed. You learn about the gradually increasing fears of the Jews, of the pressures to convert, of the dependence of the Catholic monarchs on Jewish financiers but of how they betray them in the end. You read of Jews caving to the pressures to convert. You also get a bit of sociology -- e.g., arranged marriages, early marriages.
