I recently met the head archivist at the Australian Jewish Historical Society (AJHS), Sabrina Elias ([email protected]). She is an amazing archivist with great passion for her work. She was not familiar with AJL and the work we do. She was excited to connect with us. Below is a brief description of AJHS. Founded in 1938, the Australian Jewish Historical Society (AJHS) is dedicated to promoting the study of Jewry in Australia. The records of AJHS date back to 1788. AJHS has sought to compile and make available unique and authentic records relating to the Jewish people in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands via the acquisition and preservation of historically significant documents and materials. In 2017, AJHS became the official repository of the ever-expanding archives of many of the community’s Jewish institutions. AJHS currently holds around 60,000 hardcopy/physical records; 100+ objects; 1000+ audio and audio-visual records; 16,000+ photographs and 100+ plans. There are 73 Personal Papers collections; 72 Organisational Collections and 42 Individual Donations. AJHS has its own Institutional archives of 2557 hardcopy subject files and 350 boxes with over 30 000 files, photographs, ephemera such as memorabilia, medals, charters, invitations to name a few.
