Please join us for a special screening of the film Alliance, directed by
Susan Donnelly. Donnelly will introduce the film and lead a discussion
following the screening.

In 1882, 43 immigrant families journeyed from tyrannical Russia to the
desolate fields of southern New Jersey, founding what would become the
Alliance Colony—the most prosperous and longest-lasting Jewish agricultural
settlement in the United States. Over the next few decades, hundreds of
other immigrant families joined them. By 1908, the colony had grown to
1,000 people and expanded into several neighboring villages.

Inspired by the Russian Jewish "Am Olam" movement, which advocated for a
"return to the soil," the settlers worked tirelessly to cultivate the
sandy, inhospitable terrain of southern New Jersey. Their determination
transformed Alliance into a thriving community that endured well into the
mid-20th century.

The film Alliance tells this unique immigration story, shedding light on a
little-known chapter of both Jewish and American history. Featuring over
450 archival images—96 of which come from the Library of Congress’s
collections.
