Hi,

We at Temple Concord in Syracuse NY have a very active volunteer library committee and no paid librarian. Our total collection numbers almost 6,000 volumes and, while we’re the only Reform congregation in Syracuse, we have by far the largest synagogue library.

Our committee really got active in 2014. The library had not been tended for a number of years, and things were pretty much in disarray. We were fortunate to have on the committee at that time a person who was finishing a Masters degree in Library Science at Syracuse University. He helped us find our way.

Here’s a very brief overview of how we got the library back on its feet.
  • Developed a collection policy (attached), which was approved by the Temple’s Board of Trustees.
  • Undertook a major weeding operation, guided by a weeding procedure that we wrote.
  • Decided to maintain our idiosyncratic cataloguing system.
  • Migrated from a paper-based system to an online system, migrating our catalog from an Excel spreadsheet to LibraryThing. This software has proved to be very easy to use.
  • Decided to abandon our paper-based sign-outs in favor of LibraryThing’s companion “patron” software, called LibraryCat. Doing so required putting custom barcode stickers in every volume—labor-intensive but worth it.

One of the things that has made our library shine is being a member of the Jewish Book Council Network for more than 10 years. We receive about 120 newly published, Jewish-themed books annually AND these authors are available as speakers—typically for no fee—for our monthly, virtual Author Talk Series. We are building our library through the addition of these contemporary books.

To bring you up to date, a little over a year ago,Temple Concord sold its building, and we are currently sharing space with a Conservative congregation as we plan our future location. Most of our collection is now in storage but—and this is a testament to our committee—we are still a key aspect of our congregation. We brought with us the entire children’s collection, our bible commentary collection, and the past three years’ worth of the Jewish Book Council books.

I hope this is helpful, and I’m happy to chat with you, if you’d like. Just let me know. And good luck!

Best,
Sally

My synagogue, Congregation Mishkan Israel in Hamden, CT, has a library. I am one of the volunteers who helped to re-open it 3 years ago. The library is open on Sundays during Hebrew School, but temple members can check out and return books any time.

Hi,

I know this is a long shot, but Gabriel Mordoch suggested. I contact you after he fielded my initial email.
I was looking for any statistics on what percentage of Reform synagogues have libraries, and if so, paid librarians, committees or volunteers?
I am a member of a reform synagogue in Seattle that used to have a professional librarian but has had no librarian, volunteers or committee for the past few years. The library is currently used as a classroom and meeting and event room with no one managing its use as a library. .I’m trying to chart path forward and curious to know what the current environment looks like nationally.

Thanks,
